Benefits of a Large Wool Pot and How to Use It

A large wool pot, often called a wool planter or felt grow pot, is a roomy container made from natural wool fibres. It is a practical choice for growing larger plants, herbs, vegetables, small shrubs, or indoor feature plants. Wool naturally helps regulate moisture and temperature around plant roots: it absorbs excess water, then releases it gradually as the growing mix dries. This can reduce water stress and create a more stable environment for healthy root development. The breathable material also allows air to reach the root zone, helping to prevent waterlogging and encouraging stronger roots. Large wool pots are lightweight compared with ceramic or concrete planters, making them easier to move around patios, balconies, greenhouses, and indoor spaces. They are also reusable, biodegradable at the end of their useful life, and made from a renewable natural material. To use one, place the pot in its final position or on a saucer if using it indoors, as water may seep through the wool. Fill it with a quality potting mix suited to your chosen plant, leaving space at the top for watering. Plant seedlings or established plants at the same depth as they were in their previous container, firm the mix gently, and water thoroughly. Check the pot regularly, especially during warm or windy New Zealand weather, as breathable containers can dry out faster than plastic pots. Feed plants with a suitable liquid or slow-release fertiliser according to their needs, and position the pot where it receives the right amount of sunlight.
